With aspirations to become the next Donald Trump, role models like Michael Jordan, Karl Kani, Tom Ford, and self-made millionaires Master P, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Sean "Jay-Z" Carter and Damon Dash, it’s easy to see why Kofi Boateng has been able to make the dream of pursuing fashion design into reality. But of course, like any other dream, the making of a new empire did not happen overnight.
As a youth attending a Austin-East high school which by face value looked more like a fashion show, Kofi quickly earned his reputation as one who dared to sport colors and combinations that few ventured to try. He soon learned that the most efficient way to wear clothes that no one else had, would be to make his own. In following these fashion tactics, the eager student took up sewing class with his soon to be favorite teacher of all time; Mr. Tim Scott. Here, he mastered the basics of alterations and began his quest to become a fashion designer.
However, it was not until Kofi designed an entire fur outfit that the realization of pursuing a career in fashion became apparent. Months after the creation of the fur outfit (consisting of jacket and pants), the design was spotted in a music video. Because Kofi was displeased at the use of his design without his knowledge, he decided that the best way to requite the borrowing of his ideas would be to take the initial steps into making fashion his profession.
The first step: higher education. The pressure to choose a college was particularly demanding as Kofi debated taking up offers from design schools in California, at the same time searching for a school with a renowned engineering program, and also one that would award him a sports scholarship. After carefully weighing options, he narrowed his choices to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, choosing Virginia Tech for the offer of a football scholarship. Unaware of the existence of Virginia Tech’s Apparel Design Department, Kofi spent his first year and half playing football and studying to become an engineer.
After hearing through word of mouth about the apparel major, he immediately transitioned into the major. At this point, he was juggling school, football, and designing and constructing apparel. Sensing the need to prioritize, he laid his helmet down to concentrate on finishing his B.S. in Apparel Design and launching his self-titled clothing line.
Although he had been making and altering clothing for fellow students before the debut of his clothing line, Kofi had not yet copyrighted a name for his work. The idea for the name and the official rights to the trademarked name KOFI.BOATENG and KB logo arrived in 2004, followed by massive promotion and publicity via student newspaper and fashion shows around campus. Kofi’s exclusive Kofi B. Kurves Line also received substantial support from the student body.
The quantity of clientele and supporters steadily grew and continues to grow, as men and women of all creeds and color embrace the Kofi B. style. Much of the attention can be attributed to the distinguished craftsmanship presented through the apparel of the KOFI.BOATENG line. This style originates from Kofi’s background, growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee. The influence of the so-called “Dirty-South” bares itself, aiming to create a "Street-Classy" image that ensures a second glance.
Defying the idea that fashion in America comes from either NY or LA, KB offers a fresh look at style readily embraced by the southern states and openly received everywhere else. Because such design has not been at the forefront of the industry before, Kofi in essence serves as a pioneer in promoting southern fashion. Thus, along with making clothing, he designs jewelry, handbags, and other accessories to complete the Kofi.Boateng “D-Boy Fresh” appearance.
As he continues to outwardly boost the “D-Boy Fresh” image, deep down he never forgets to acknowledge and show gratitude for his biggest inspirations; his mother, Jehovah God, and Down South music.
Now located in the mecca of the south, Atlanta, GA, Kofi can be found continuously striving to expand his network and domain as CEO of the KOFI.BOATENG clothing lines.
